MEET AMBER SMITH, HR/FINANCE COORDINATOR
The power of positive: resilience and focus for success
Amber Smith is our HR & Finance Coordinator - a new role for the organisation two years ago when she joined. With 8 years of experience in the HR field, Amber has worked her way up from an HR Assistant holding positions such as HR Administrator, HR Payroll Administrator and finally HR/Finance coordinator at VAS-X. She was looking for a change of scene from her role in HR at a Temporary Employment Service provider when she found us. Little did she know how many women were in the minority in her new field of tech and telco! But it has not phased her, and she has done a brilliant job putting her own stamp on the new job and carving out her own niche.
Adapting to a new environment
“VAS-X was a very different environment to what I was used to. The only thing that was the same was that I had to build a ‘me’ into the company as the position was a new one for the organisation. However, it’s very supportive of everyone’s needs, which is really refreshing, and we have an amazing management team that is always there for us with advice when we need it - or just to vent!
“I think that I have come a really long way in these two years since I started at VAS-X, setting up new processes around me and being part of some core company initiatives.”
Indeed, Amber has been instrumental in finalising our employee handbook, as well as getting benefits and onboarding decks set up for our new starters.
Contributing to company culture
“Improving the company’s allure by helping to get the employee Medical Aid and Life/Pension benefits set up is something I’m really proud of, not to mention how long I have been standing in a profession that I didn't even consider for myself. But also, some of my proudest achievement is having my two healthy daughters who I love spending time with!”
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Amber believes in the power of resilience, and focus on what you want to achieve. She believes in countering negativity with positivity and promoting improved communication and collaboration between team members.
